Castle of Epoisses

A royal castle in Burgundy

Open-air theatre

On Saturday August 10, 2024 at 8pm in the château's main courtyard, the AMAB company presents Corneille's Le Cid. Following the highly successful performances of Les Jeux de l'Amour et du Hasard and Cyrano de Bergerac, this year the AMAB company presents Le Cid, Pierre Corneille's first great public success. It's a play that had a huge impact in the early 17th century because of the quarrel it provoked. Corneille's rival theorists accused him of not following all the rules of classical theater. Corneille replied that the beauty of a play is not measured by the number of rules it respects. The action of this play centers around Chimène and Don Rodrigue, two young men caught up in the turmoil of an interminable vendetta who must choose between their honor and the love they feel for each other.

History of Epoisses castle

Classified as a historical monument, the Epoisses castle is located in the center of Burgundy, in a beautiful and rich plain that bears its name. Its history dates back to the 6th century. A veritable fortress, this medieval complex which was inhabited in turn by the Queen of the Franks, the Dukes of Burgundy, the Grand Condé and the Marquise de Sévigné, preserves the memory of each century both in its architecture and in its interior decorations, such as a true witness to the history of France. Owned by the same family since 1661, the family maintains the old house by continuing the conservation of this exceptional site, opening it to visitors, which has never before been so splendid.
